I am no expert on this, only my observation. I've been told this is a "field" iris, a wild, self propagating sort. My aunt gifted me a stand of them as seeds. I call them the Aunt Laura iris. Now a bit about including "flag". Absolutely with no expertise: my father called the larger iris "flags", and we collected them for family graves every Memorial Day. A friend severely questioned calling iris flags, so I did some serious research, and learned the name is from the French, for the trefoil, and used as a Memorial Day tribute to fallen soldiers. Lovely photo.
Thanks for this info. In truth, I was not sure if it was a blue flag, and should have put a question mark after it. This one is a wildflower, found in the Oakland Wildlife Preserve in Orange County, Florida. I like the idea of a "field" iris naturalizing up north. Also very happy to hear that it was used as a Memorial Day tribute to fallen soldiers. Very touching.
I lost my mother three years ago this month. Your loss is very moving to me. I also was so happy to "get to know her" a little through your blog. She seems like she was a beautiful person and deserved a beautiful flower.

DeleteA beautiful tribute!
ReplyDeleteThanks, am. Any thoughts on the symbolism of a purple (or lavender) iris?
